Speech Surrogates

Summary

Talking drum system of the Kru people of Liberia mentioned in Faseun (2008) and Mekeel (1937). Use of the drumming system is not handed down through a particular family, unlike other official positions in traditional Kru society; instead, it is learned through an apprenticeship process (Mekeel 1937:88). Content includes long-distance announcements, “to assemble court and call people by name” (89).
